You Ought to Stop at this National Monument

 

 

When you have a National Parks Pass in hand… you just GOTTA use it!

My co-pilot & I were traveling west on I-90 in South Dakota.  It was late afternoon, we had been on the road for a couple of days and Rapid City was only 60 more miles away.  Sometimes when we are traveling…we just GO…… and go…     It was only last year when we stopped at Mount Rushmore, but our parking pass was still valid, the National Parks Pass was in the glove box and reason#3… …Rushmore is so Incredibly Amazing!

It was definitely time to stretch the legs  and enjoy some outdoor time.  A short hike and plenty of time to spend wandering Rapid City  would be a nice change of pace.

Both times we have visited the Presidents, it has been during the winter, definitely not a  prime time for visitors… but that’s what we like.  It was chilly out…and overcast, a bit of snow on the ground, we pretty much had the place to ourselves.

Last December we spent much of our time at Rushmore in the museum.  It was there we learned to really appreciate this monument.

 

The Meaning of Mount Rushmore

The four American Presidents carved into the granite of Mount Rushmore were chosen by the sculpter to commemorate the founding, growth, preservation, and development of the United States. They symbolize the principals of liberty and freedom on which the nation was founded.  George Washington signifies the struggle for independence and the birth of the Republic;  Thomas Jefferson the territorial expansion of the country; Abraham Lincoln the permanent union of the states, and equality for all citizens;  and Theodore Roosevelt, the 20th Century role of the United States in world affairs and the right of the
