When the Weather Outside is Frightful…Time to Vacation

When the Weather Outside is Frightful…Time to Vacation

By Amy Lignor

November is here! As the trick-or-treating décor is taking away and the large, cardboard turkeys wearing pilgrim hats arrive, the thought of winter coming in with a big, robust, freezing cold hello is on everyone’s minds.

winter, escapes, weather, Christmas, getaways, vacation, life is shortWhen the weather outside is about to get frightful, there are those who wish for the “delightful.” There are also those who wish for more bright white snow. Whether it be the first or the second – or perhaps a “middle” path that could give you both depending on how old Mother Nature is feeling at the time – there are some true vacation spots that you need to look into. In fact, you need to book them now, considering that Christmas will be here before you know it.

So we start with the “delightful.” Key West, Florida, as always – even though it has a “party” reputation – is one of the most beautiful areas for all ages to go to and enjoy. Yes, you can have that drink on the warm beach, but you can also find stunning Victorian homes, art galleries and museums. As well as take to the water and go kayaking under the stunning sunset.

Puerto Rico is yet another getaway for the 2015 crowd looking for the ball to drop on a New Year. You are talking warmth and fun “old-world style” with amazing music, unbelievable food, beaches, rain forests – you name it – without leaving the U.S. you can pre-plan this much-needed winter break right now.

Now we come to others that can be “middle of the road” as far as that weather is concerned. Yes, they are usually warm as toast, but look out for that winter landscape if Mother Nature happens to change her mind. Where to go for both kids and adults? There is only one for magic, adventure and a mystical power that is so grand you will never forget it. Down in Orlando, Florida, there is a stunning castle and “realm” that all must see. Hogwarts is there – Harry Potter’s home – with Diagon Alley included. This is one place that will be imprinted on the brain; the place you will want to visit many times over, no matter what the weather is outside.

For a slower style, where calm, peaceful, serenity is your thing, Tybee Island, Georgia, is stunning. The amazing lighthouse is like a guard; a watcher that takes care of the five+ miles that include beautiful beaches, affordable places to stay, and a boardwalk that takes you back in time. And in just a quick hop-skip-and-a-jump, you can find yourselves in the allure and charm of Savannah.

Cheap lodging, stunning scenery, and fun for all ages? You won’t believe this answer, perhaps, but Las Vegas is “Christmasville” to many. You are talking about huge holiday displays, events, kid-friendly locales and entertainment everywhere. Yes, those slot machines are beeping, but with the decor and fun atmosphere, Las Vegas looks the actual North Pole…without that pesky snow getting in the way.

And, finally, there are those who love that bright white snow. And in the United States you have an entire section of the country where you can always find the perfect family fun when it comes to skiing, shopping and really enjoying that “wintry” Christmas feeling. Places like Keystone, Colorado, where kids ski free, you will find resorts, such as River Run Village. Talk about the Christmas charm, this tiny town located at the foot of the mountain offers a gondola that lets you ride up to the summit in absolute style, staring out at a landscape that looks as if it was created by Santa, himself.

In the core of the Rocky Mountains, you will find Bridger Bowl for the skiing and shopping experience. And just next door is Bozeman, where you can learn all about the history of the Rockies by cruising the Museum. If wanting to go east, Vermont is the number one choice when seeking the most beautiful ski resorts.

But no matter what your choice: the warm sunshine, the mystical world of a boy wizard, or the white terrain that only winter can provide…now is the time to plan that vacation that will be much-needed once winter comes a-callin’.
