USO’ Tennis Feels as Magical & Fun as a UFO in Roswell

USO’ Tennis Feels as Magical & Fun as a UFO in Roswell

~ Amy Lignor

Yes, the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows is a whole lot of fun this year – but, oddly enough, it’s not all for the great play. The swings and serves have been astounding for some, but the real fun is coming from the unexpected, making this one of the fiercest and most incredibly interesting U.S. Opens ever to occur.

us-open-tennisWe have to begin with the Federer ‘fun shot’. Let’s face it, this guy is fun whether he is on or off his game. But when it came to competing
against Marinko Matosevic of Australia, it was as if a movie director was filming the entire thing. Not only was there drama, but Federer brought the gasps and the smiles when his backhand made the fans rise from their seats and cheer. It was a shot, also, that didn’t even count. Striding toward the net to volley, Matosevic lobbed and sent the master, Federer, chasing after the ball toward the baseline like a wolf after a hare with a limp. The voice of a fan suddenly shouted: “Tweener!” – which is actually a reference to Federer’s unbelievable between-the-legs shot that allowed him to win back in the 2009 semifinals. The ball was out, which is why it didn’t matter, but Federer listened to his fans and attempted the shot anyway, hitting Matosevic with the actual shot because the Australian had already turned around and walked away, knowing that his shot was out. Federer laughed and the crowd screamed; although, Matosevic lost in the end, so he probably wasn’t as happy as the fans were.

For the Williams’ sisters, all that can be said for Serena and Venus is that for this U.S. Open…it’s A REAL JUNGLE OUT THERE.

Serena’s jungle was something she brought with her. It was Tuesday night of last week when she took the court wearing a Nike leopard-print dress. It was all the rage, and definitely increased the fun seeing as that her victory in the first-round was already a given. Every reporter wanted to talk to Serena about her fashion and not her game, letting her know that she positively sizzled in that phenomenal wardrobe; to which Serena responded with cat sounds and scratching claws. Look out ladies, Serena is on the prowl and you will most definitely be her prey.

Venus’s jungle, however, came from the natural world. Apparently, Venus’s opponent may have called in Mother Nature in order to attempt a win against the Williams’ sister. However, the attempt failed. Venus was buzzing – ahead 3-0 in the final set – when a bee decided to interrupt her game. Flying a bit too close to Venus as she readied to serve, she attempted to ‘shoo’ it away with her racket. The little jungle beast wanted some court time of its own, however, and caused Venus to move back and forth across the court, waving her hand until a helper was able to catch the bee and allow Venus to finish off her human opponent. Everyone loves Venus, but she has now made friends with environmentalists everywhere, seeing as that she would not use her handy weapon to hit the wayward bee, allowing it to create its own ‘buzz’ at the Open.

Last, but definitely not least thus far, is a wunderkind named CICI. Let’s face it, this is a kid who rocked the U.S. Open by winning her very first match, before losing her second. But word of mouth spread all over the place regarding this young girl and had fans struggled to get a seat in order to view this talented teen after her first-round surprise win.
