The Whitetail Reigns Supreme

The Whitetail Reigns Supreme

by ZZ Troutki

The most sought after game animal in North America remains the Whitetail Deer. This is no surprise, seeing as that this one animal has intrigued all groups for a long time, deer hunters and non.

When it comes to the relationship of whitetail and hunter, many items are touted as being the best when it comes to helping the hunter land that prized game. Ammo, firearms, tree stands – anything and everything is manufactured in this modern age to help bring that trophy buck home. The one item, of course, that all hunters are jumping on board to purchase is the Game Sled from Hunting’s a Drag, Inc.

Available in a variety of sizes to help the hunter, depending on the weight of the prey being focused on, the Game Sled has proved to be the best when it comes to easy transport. Whether alone or with a partner out there in the Great Outdoors, the Game Sled is lightweight to save the hunter’s back and knees; not to mention the specialized gurneys were created in an innovative way that does not disturb the hair on the whitetail, or the animal’s habitat. In other words, the prey is able to be taken out of the woods in an easy, time-saving manner, leaving no environmental damage behind.

The whitetail will always have that mystique for hunters. No, it’s not a unique creature by any means, considering that they are the most widespread deer population in the world. But their actions, reactions, their ‘homebody’ attitude, and those mighty stags that hide themselves away in the most White tail-Road Trekin Adventures-BeFirst Media-remote locations possible in order to add points to their already grand antlers, are only a few reasons why the whitetail is still the creature hunters want to bag.

When it comes to just North America, the whitetail population is estimated at 20 to 25 million, which are chased by an estimated 10+ million hunters each and every year. Spotting deer, whether it be in the rugged range of Montana, the arid plateaus of Arizona, or the thick, dense forests of Maine is not a hard task, but the intelligent and already wary creature is still hard to snag

A small home range is what the whitetail thrives on; if they find the right forage and ample bedding a herd will remain for a good, long time. It is only the harsh weather conditions that force them to move temporarily in most cases.

In the Southwest, the number of does per buck are actually smaller than in the southwest, which means that the western deer move longer distances to feed, bed and breed.

A whitetail’s normal lifespan is 11 to 12 years; many of course are hit by cars, killed by predators, or shot by hunters. The fact is that in heavily hunted areas, many bucks live only 2 years. But the longer they maintain a lifespan, the better. They become that amazing trophy every hunter is dying to take down.

East of the Rocky Mountains, the whitetail reigns; whereas west, the mule deer dominates. The Blacktail deer inhabit the areas west of the Cascade Range from Northern California to Southeast Alaska, and some unique populations have been created from mixtures of the species.

Whatever sub-species it might be, however, deer are the rage in the fall. Many hunters and property owners will make sure to shed hunt, allowing them to see the growth happening, making them better able to keep tabs on the herd. Velvet from the antlers are shed in August and September which is a calling card for where they roam. And when looking for that large herd, they can always be found where good food crops are thriving. Antler growth will improve with a property owner’s choice of high-protein crops, and those particular deer will gain overall health and size.

Yes, moose and elk are also among the popular game animals, which technically are species of deer. But the uniqueness of the whitetail has remained in the forefront of the hunter’s mind. Each and every year the hunter will slowly become excited, thinking that somewhere out there is that stunning buck they’ve been waiting to see.

With the Game Sled as part of the gear, taking the ‘mighty’ one home will not be a problem.
