The Need to Stop Fracking!

by Carmen Schwartz

Everyone already knows what hacking means. In this computer-driven world, actually, it’s a word that is constantly being spoken about as more and more people find a way to hack others’ computer accounts in order to do serious damage to both individual’s and businesses.

But fracking is a word less common; a word that’s not used a great deal in public chatrooms. But although fracking is a lesser known fracking 2term than hacking, it is just as bad. Actually, it’s worse. Whereas there are more and more laws coming out about hacking and plans being put into place that stop hackers – fracking continues on and is literally ruining the globe.

There seem to be oil spills every day, as well as breaks in pipelines that have small towns worried to death that their drinking water, air and everything else has been tainted with dangerous chemicals. And the volume of voices supporting the discovery and use of renewable energy sources in order to say goodbye to gasses and oil forever, has been turned way up.

One of the reasons this conversation is getting louder and louder is because of hydraulic fracturing. This technique has raised serious environmental concerns that include everything from groundwater contamination to substandard air quality to the mishandling of waste.

Hydraulic fracturing actually originated in the United States, so most of the environmental impact studies have taken place right here, and the results are getting worse and worse with every report.

.

There are a list of names – organizations, concerned citizens, as well as media outlets – that state it’s almost impossible to report on these negative results when it comes to hydraulic fracturing due to both the industry and the government. And much like it always is when it comes to mentioning ‘big’ oil companies and their industry, many people believe that horrendous facts about fracking are being kept secret so that the process surges forward.

frackingResearchers continue to recommend full disclosure to the people regarding all hydraulic fracturing fluids, testing animals raised near fracturing sites, and closer monitoring of environmental samples. But it still remains that after court cases concerning contamination from fracking have been settled and come to a close, that the documents are sealed up tight as a drum. This truly screams out the fact that someone is hiding something that could literally be harming the public’s health and safety right this minute.

Fracking is in the news…and the results that come from this technique are making people sit up and pay attention. When petroleum is extracted and produced from onshore or offshore wells, it is a truth that raw natural gas associated with the oil is brought to the surface. One gas is hydrogen sulfide, which is an irritant and chemical asphyxiant that can alter the central nervous system.

When it comes to water, by taking large quantities of water to use for fracking, this diverts water from other much more needed uses, such as human consumption or stream flow. It was in Barnhart, Texas, in fact, that an aquifer actually ran dry because of industrial fracking. There are also huge concerns about possible contamination by hydraulic fracturing fluid, seeing as that it’s injected under high pressure into the ground. As the fracturing fluid flows back, it consists of spent fluids, which means wells end up needing treatment they aren’t getting, and disposing of this wastewater is not being done.

Fracking is, in its simplest terms, a way for companies to ‘dig out’ oil gas, shale, etc., for our energy needs. Yet everyday there are more and more reports about renewable energy sources that are far better, healthier and more abundant that this country could be using.

The solution is easy. You don’t want someone taking your social security number? Stop the hacking! You don’t want your air and water polluted because you and your children could face an early death? Then…stop fracking!
