The Media Needs to Allow “Fight Songs” Without Starting Fights

The Media Needs to Allow “Fight Songs” Without Starting Fights

by Amy Lignor

Madonna said “express yourself.” Then…she did. In every way she wished. Whether it was with a lace glove and really funky hair telling everyone she was a virgin; or, whether it was when she aged and decided to wear cone breasts (ouch) on the stage. She did what she wanted and didn’t really care what anyone thought of her. Of course, that’s the difference between celebrities in music and movies as opposed to celebrities in the NFL. Celebrities in one genre use the bad publicity to get even more fans, whereas the NFL just gets more bad press.
ExpressYourselfUnderGround_croppedEveryone is yet again yapping about something silly. Cam Newton, QB for the Carolina Panthers, did an end zone victory dance. Gasp? Why? Is the man good at his job? You bet. He’s proved that. Is he a flash in the pan? Is everyone making too much of a deal considering the guy has a long road ahead in order to attain glory? Most likely. But it doesn’t really matter. Right now the Carolina Panthers are playing at a high skill level, yet when Cam earned a TD and began to do his little dance, a comment was made. And then ALL of a sudden the very next day, the media came on ESPN and other stations to call the comment a form of “bigotry.” They took a simple thing, like a player’s fight song (AKA: their celebration) and turned it into a fight that shouldn’t be had.

These experts proved again they have nothing to do but rev up a debate, even injecting statements, like if Tom Brady – the golden boy of the NFL – had made the dance, then it would have been just fine. They began the immediate debate regarding the difference between white and African-American. I hope all fans of football, and people in general, say: STOP!

This culture has gone to the birds. We are regressing back BEFORE MLK, Jr. made his speech and did his good work. BEFORE Rosa sat on that bus. Heck, give the media a chance to keep blowing these things out of proportion and we’ll be regressing back BEFORE the Civil War. Enough!

Do you not remember the showmen of the NFL over the years? Or any other game, for that matter? Prime Time – Neon Deion Sanders – was the best of the best whether playing the game or being the ultimate showman. Brett Favre of the Green Bay Packers loved to egg on the defense of the other team, run amok across the field as if some invisible warriors were after him, and no matter how hard he was knocked to the turf, the guy bounced up like he hadn’t been touched and smiled wide.

Refrigerator Perry – you’ll never forget him. In fact, he ended up to be a national phenomenon. Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots; the guy has a ball because he loves playing ball. Spiking, dancing, lifting his fellow teammates into his arms and carrying them off the field. The guy is awesome to watch especially when he nabs that TD. There are even lesser known NFL players who made up their own dances. Remember Kelley Washington? He had his very own TD celebration called: “The Squirrel.”

The point was and remains that the fans not only want their team to win, but they also want the victory to be enjoyed. They want their team and their players to celebrate because they, too, want to celebrate. The NFL is the most popular sport in the United States today. And, yes, there are some serious problem players who have actually made dire mistakes. But the majority of players still out on those fields are good men, good at their jobs, and really, really want to win. And celebrate that win.

In others words, it is time to stop the “experts” in the media from making mountains out of molehills. You’re not debating anything. You’re making the world even angrier than it already is; and after seeing the headlines this past week…don’t you think the world has had enough? Talk football. Debate the games and the plays. Do your jobs. Don’t become ridiculous politicians who want to make others fight. We already have enough of those.
