Steph Curry Becomes First NBA Player Ever to Win MVP Award Unanimously

By Burt Carey

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award a record six times. Michael Jordan and Bill Russell accomplished the feat five times, and Wilt Chamberlain and LeBron James have four MVP awards in their trophy cases.

And yet none of them nor any other MVP accomplished what Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has done in 2016: He’s the first player to be named MVP by unanimous vote of 131 eligible sports writers.

And yet NBA fans today are asking: Is he deserving? Is Curry that good?

For the superstar’s part, Curry appears humbled by all of the attention his second consecutive MVP award is bringing his way.

“I looked at the list of everybody who’s won an MVP award — legends,” Curry said Tuesday in accepting the award. “To be the first unanimous MVP award winner is something I don’t even know how to put into words.”

He made his comments less than 24 hours after returning from a sprained knee to lead the Warriors in a dramatic 132-125 playoff overtime victory over the Portland Trailblazers in which he scored 17 points in overtime – yet another NBA record. The Warriors lead the series 3-1.

“I don’t think anyone could have predicted the explosion,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr said of Curry. “That was crazy. The guy had played one basketball game in three weeks.”

Curry’s 2016 season tells the story best. He averaged 30.1 points per game during the regular season and hit an NBA record 402 three-point shots. He made 91 percent of his free throws, more than 50 percent of his shots from the field, and 45 percent of his three-point attempts, joining a very distinguished and small group of NBA players to finish a season in the 90-50-45 club.

Oh, and the Warriors won 73 games during the 82-game regular season after winning the NBA championship last year.

“Winning MVP last year wasn’t enough,” Kerr said of Curry on Tuesday. “You came back this year dramatically better. I’ve seen very few players who possess the confidence you have. You better believe in yourself when you’re shimmying at 1 for 11.”

“For us, and for me especially, no matter how great people tell you you are, or how lucky or inadequate critics say you are, whatever drives you inside, wherever you find that will to keep going — it’s about not being complacent and always trying to get better, no matter how hard that mission might be,” Curry said Tuesday.

“I want to be remembered as somebody who worked hard,” he said, “who got the most out of my potential, who pushed the envelope.”
