Release the Kraken…No, Seriously

Release the Kraken…No, Seriously

~ Amy Lignor

When Washington, D.C. agrees on something, either it’s completely the right thing to do, or…it’s an election year. (Oh, yeah.) Anyway, this time out it does seem to be the first reason, as the Senate gets together to let the NFL know they need to take a much more aggressive
domestic-violencestance against domestic violence. We are talking a zero tolerance stance – and it should not be weighed on whether or not an ‘accused’ is a popular player, or someone who sits on the bench for most of their days and the public doesn’t even know their name.

But there are things that are seriously missing here. Yes, Ray Rice is all over the news and that elevator tape was disgusting. He became the poster child for why you ban domestic abuse in the NFL, and he deserved what he got. Well, actually he deserved far more than a slap on the wrist from law enforcement. Some say it’s likely that his career is over. But remember, as it is with political figures in Washington, there are only two ways you can never climb out of the toilet to return to a seat of power…and Ray Rice is not guilty of either of those. Therefore, he has more than a ‘chance’ to return.

Roger Goodell is being raked over the coals. No one actually knows anything and, to me, it can NOT be a surprise to anyone out there that egotistical morons who play football – morons who do, yes, assault women – have existed before this. For anyone who thought this was a shock, you have obviously not watched the news in a good, long time.

But when it comes to the NFL, this is a sport that children watch. This is a sport with idols that they want to be ‘just like’ when they grow up. Hence, absolutely the NFL should have a zero tolerance policy and actually enforce it no matter who lands on the table. Protecting ‘The Shield’ is not what is at stake here – it’s pulling the ‘Shield’ up from the basement of garbage it’s slipping into in order to once again be shiny in football fans’ eyes. But Goodell be thrown out? Come on. If he saw the tape, or didn’t see it, he is still not the one who hit anyone in the face.

There is one thing, however, that is beyond confusing. Yes, it was touched upon by a weepy 78-year-old owner who looked like he was reading a statement before heading home to throw himself off a balcony. The Carolina Panthers have an issue. This issue is in the middle of the “legal process,” where everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Oh, wait a second…he was.

Greg Hardy is not someone who you think may have played a part in domestic violence; he is a man who you KNOW did just that. Why? Because that same legal process found him guilty. This is the guy, by the way, who wears the face paint of the ‘Kraken’. And will most likely appear in Tampa Bay on Sunday when he should be suffering the same penalty Ray Rice is at this very moment.

But instead of releasing Hardy, the NFL told him that he will be fined mucho dollars if he releases the ‘Kraken’ on the field ever again. They have zero tolerance for this ‘uniform violation’, but, apparently not for the fact that Hardy has been found guilty of domestic violence. You figure it out.

This is a man who does not hide from making news headlines; in fact, he works to create more. Believe it or not, Hardy was fined $5,250 for wearing gold cleats last season. And as far as the ‘Kraken’ make-up is concerned, Hardy stated this back in 2011:

“The Kraken is a giant monster that just demolishes everything that moves,” Hardy said. “On Wednesday or Thursday, I go down in my subconscious. I find him, and I unlock the cage. About Saturday he usually comes out. Then, he’s always out on Sunday. I don’t control him then. What he does when I’m not there, I don’t know.”

I can’t believe he didn’t use that as a defense that he did not assault anyone…the ‘Kraken’ did. And the female that was victimized should be blamed because she should have known only to be near him on Monday and Tuesday…when he was his kind, sweet, loving self.

Hardy missed a big practice this week to meet his attorney. There is gossip out there that he is working on a plea bargain in order to pre-empt his scheduled Nov. 17th appeal of the July 15th guilty verdict handed down for assaulting and threatening his ex-girlfriend.

So the question is: Are there decision-makers anymore? Because keeping the ‘Kraken’ already found guilty by a court of law – is far dumber than anything Goodell knew, didn’t know, or simply refuses to acknowledge. Let’s look at the real criminals here and DO something about it. Remember, this is the last thing the Senate will most likely ever agree on.
