Perhaps the Government Can Take Pointers from America’s Champions?

 by Amy Lignor

Although our government can’t seem to agree on anything, and has – as a result – shut down and walked away from their jobs making our country look like the silliest once since the Romans thought they could rule over everything – there IS one America’s team that did a solid job.

The Americans stayed together on the back nine and the front nine. They made shots that were beyond amazing – and, as always, it came down to Tiger Woods and his talent to keep America the winner of the Presidents Cup since 1994.

For those who are unaware, the Presidents Cup is a series of men’s golf matches played between a U.S. team and an International team; the Internationals represent every country with the exception of Europe, simply because Europe has their chance at defeating the the cupUnited States when they play against them for the Ryder Cup.

This year the event was hosted in the U.S. in Dublin, Ohio – and the fans were more than happy to attend. Leaving the green when the sun fell from the sky and returning every morning, the golfers put up with rain – which was a constant ‘buddy’ – making it impossible for any ball to actually bounce.

The U.S. had the lead going into the final round of singles matches. Everyone did their part for America, with Tiger Woods giving the crowd an amazing moment to keep on their Smartphones. He hit the ball which landed four-feet below the pin for an eagle that was conceded, and gained a 2-up lead that allowed the American team to rally.

When Sunday came round, the Presidents Cup rivalry ended exactly the same as it has since 1994 – well, as far as a win for America was concerned. But it was the Tiger who delivered America the winning point which, yet again, brings Tiger even further back up in the world’s and the fan’s estimation. (Past transgressions have most definitely been forgiven).

.

In the final hour, Tiger hung on to beat Richard Sterne, offering America the 18-points they needed in order to take the Cup for the fifth straight time. Out of the five now won, it is Tiger who can claim the final glory three straight times.

He said, once again with humility, that the whole thing was a team effort, even though Tiger achieved 4-1 – the best record of any player. And even though the rain was a constant, there didn’t need to be any play today, because even though America was 3 down in two matches, they turned it all around and needed only four wins out of the 12 singles matches to claim the Cup. This is when the dispatching of the International players began. They gave it a good shot…but, like the Cowboys yesterday when they played the Broncos (48-51), the International team just missed the golden moment – or, in this case, the golden Cup.

Was Tiger as spectacular as Peyton Manning in the NFL? No, not really. But he was spectacular enough. No birdies were made on the back nine. Tiger even looked as if his back had gone out on the 15th green.  But on the 18th, his opponent, Sterne, was faced with a 50-foot birdie putt – and Woods was looking at a 30-foot attempt. Sterne conceded.

This event and the America’s Cup win proves that a ‘team’ or a ‘unit’ from America CAN win. They can play, they can agree, and they can even make their ‘people’ proud. Too bad Congress can’t say the same.

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy
