Mike Trout Is Poster Child of MLB’s Young Guns

By Burt Carey

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim knew they had something special when they selected Mike Trout as the 25th pick in the first round of the 2009 amateur draft. And now the entire baseball world is standing in awe of a 23-year-old whose trophy room is quickly filling up with accolades.

He wasn’t merely the MVP of both the 2014 and 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star games, and the 2014 American League MVP. He’s the first player in MLB history to win back-to-back All-Star game MVP awards. In the 2014 season he battled .287 with a career-high 36 home runs, and became the first unanimous MVP winner since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1997. And he was the 2012 American League Rookie of the Year.

This season, batting .307 at the All-Star break, with 28 home runs and 57 RBIs for a team that sits atop the American League West standings, he’s making a strong case for a second consecutive league MVP award.

The Angels organization has Trout under contract through the 2020 season, paying a handsome $144.5 million over six years. And he’ll become somewhat immortalized this Friday with a special Mike Trout bobblehead night at Angel Stadium.

Prior to the Angels-Rangers game Friday night, the Angels will reveal a life-sized bobblehead of Trout that stands at 6-foot-2, which happens to be the height of the reigning American League Most Valuable Player.

All that for a guy who just four years ago was a 19-year-old East Carolina University star outfielder who made a name for himself as a right-handed power hitter who can run and throw with any centerfielder in MLB, and whose acrobatic, home run-stealing catches have become somewhat routine.

Anyone who thinks all of the attention and awards might spoil a player so young hasn’t been paying attention. Trout is one of the league’s young stars who says he always strives to be a good role model for kids, and he’s still improving.

“There’s always room for improvement,” Trout said at a media event after returning to California from the All-Star break. “Once you think you’ve got this game figured out, it’s going to kick you in the rear end and put you back in place. I always try to get better each and every day, if it comes to defense or base running or little things at the plate, there’s always room for improvement.”

Trout missed the first game back following the All-Star break due to a sore heel but is expected to be in the Angels lineup come bobblehead night. Fox Sports West will carry the game. The network will also air “Before the Bigs: Mike Trout,” on July 31 at 10:30 p.m.
