Massive Cheers and Fears for the 4th of July Sports Weekend

Massive Cheers and Fears for the 4th of July Sports Weekend

~ Amy Lignor

There were most definitely cheers…

Not since McEnroe’s mouth and angry ways has tennis actually been this much fun. Even though there are those who will claim that fact is not true and they simply love the sport, McEnroe and his fights ARE what made it fun. But this morning, just a few minutes ago, the best (sometimes most awkward) match at Wimbledon began.

McEnroe, Wimbledon, U.S. Open, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, FIFA World Cup, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Spirit of AmericaThe Williams’ sisters faced each other, although most of the time they looked at the ground as if trying to forget that the ‘one they love’ was the one they were slamming the ball at. But, no matter, the serves were delivered at over a hundred miles an hour in most cases – the competition was fierce – and it did end the way people thought it would. Serena (already winning the Australian Open and the French, now shooting for Wimbledon and then the U.S. Open in order to make that Grand Slam complete), has moved on to the quarterfinals, with her sister, Venus, taking a bow. But, boy, was it a magnificent bow. These two women are prime athletes and the U.S. is extraordinarily proud of them as they always bring skill, talent and love of the sport to the court. And although Serena moves on by winning two sets, Venus is cheered, as well. Both, for their ultimate belief in the spirit of competition and, more importantly, the support of each other.

More cheers came about before the sisters went at each other…

Sixteen minutes on the field and the U.S. ends with a huge BANG in the world of soccer. The title of champions belongs to the U.S. as they hoisted the FIFA World Cup in the air to massive cheers. The U.S. promised that they would win, even putting on commercials claiming that although it ended in a bad way for them the last time around, it would NOT happen again. Some people cringed at those ads, fearing that by saying that it would be testing the ‘gods’ in some frightening way – like when people said that a ship was unsinkable and then the huge thing met up with an iceberg…

But the World Cup was ultimately placed in the hands of the United States, proving that the July 4th holiday weekend was the UNITED STATES holiday weekend and ‘We, the People’ were going to take Japan on and win without blinking an eye. And in a way…no eyes seemed to be blinked at all. In fact, at times it seemed like the U.S. was the only team on the field, especially when a goal soared across the field – a goal that should have been easy to stop – yet the goalie missed and the ball simply ‘rolled’ into the net. That was a surprise not only for fans but also both teams. Congrats U.S.!

And there were definite fears…

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won his fourth at Daytona on Sunday night…but his father was the one who jumped into everyone’s mind as they watched ‘Car #3’ (the same number Earnhardt Sr. was driving when he died on this same track in the Daytona 500 back in 2001), fly into the air. Haunting, eerie…everyone was breathless when in the final lap of the rain-delayed Coke Zero 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, Austin Dillon crashed into the catchfence, creating a frightening pile-up that included debris being sent directly at spectators, as Dillon’s car erupted in flames. Thankfully, even though the car was completely demolished, with the engine sitting all by itself with no car to be found, Dillon was cheered because he walked away from a crash that looked as if there was no way to survive.

In other words, when it came to this weekend of honoring our country, the United States not only was able to be proud of our past and our heritage, but we were also able to be extremely proud of the men and women who consistently show the determination, fearless strength and spirit of America!
