Looking Forward to the Winter Getaway

Looking Forward to the Winter Getaway

by Amy Lignor

Yes, the kids have just gone back to school and summer will be saying aloha very soon. But although it may seem far too early to be planning that winter break getaway, it is most definitely not. Right now is the absolute best time to make reservations; from transportation to lodging, all the greatest deals can be found right this second.

But finding an economical yet fun place to go – a locale that not only offers all kinds of variety, but also comes at an economical price – can be impossible. But not when you find out exactly what the best cities are for your next vacation, that offer quality dining choices, cultural and historical sites to see, and beautiful hotels that are literally priced exactly right. There are various cities to be had in this category, but here are the ones that are most interesting (and most affordable) that will make that getaway perfect.

freebies, economical lodging, cultural, historical, great deals, perfect getaways, vacation ideas, cuisine

Kansas City, Missouri

Out of all the cities to choose from, people vote, as being the top choice when it comes to freebies, economical lodging that is absolutely unforgettable, as well as dining and sites to see. Kansas City is actually one of the very few places in America where the prices of hotel rooms have either stayed the same or dropped in the past year to enable more people to check out the treasures they have to offer. Sightseeing spots are numerous, and a variety are absolutely free. Kansas City’s main art museums, as well as tours through the Hallmark Visitors Center and the famous Boulevard Brewing Company, are all free. And when it comes to food, Kansas City offers the most succulent slow-smoked barbecue you’ll ever taste.

Cities in Tennessee are high on the list of being ones that people truly love to see. Nashville, being the first choice. The home to country music offers up the most incredible hamburgers, and there are lovely cafés and microbrews aplenty. And still, to this day, the shows at the legendary Bluebird Café are absolutely free to enjoy. Add in the historical spots, and you have yourself the perfect family vacation.

But Nashville is not alone; Memphis gets in on the action, as well. Memphis has always ranked very high when it comes to enjoying free music – from street performers to taking a seat at the famous Levitt Shell, the music never stops. The history is immense; even Elvis was the opening act at the Shell back in 1954, and when it comes to gourmet food and restaurants that will live on in your dreams once the vacation comes to an end, Memphis is the city that provides.

The Lone Star State is also one of the highest-ranking when it comes to cities that are affordable and unforgettable. Depending on what you want, you have history, amazing Texas cuisine, hotels that are both memorable and low-cost for the family, and more. If looking for the metropolitan, very cool, shopping experience, Dallas is there. If wanting the more rustic, western life, Fort Worth can be found right down the highway. But don’t forget San Antonio, with its slew of free attractions, including the famous Alamo. In addition, the beauty of San Antonio is hard to match. The Riverwalk can be found in the city, where visitors can rent bikes and enjoy nature. And seeing that this getaway may be planned for the holiday months, San Antonio is definitely a stunner at Christmas. The city is decorated to the nines with luminarias, and the food is out of this world.

Salt Lake City is where you go for awe-inspiring scenery. Not only affordable when it comes to lodging and food, it also offers a discount pass on the website of its tourist board. Called, Connect Pass, families get free meals and attractions, such as Olympic Park tours or admission to the Natural History Museum and the very fun, Hogle Zoo.

The movies are most definitely right when it comes to the old-time charm of Savannah, Georgia. Pedestrians love this one, enjoying all the walking tours, parks, and historic homes. From Haunted Savannah to Historic Savannah there are apps that allow you to check out every nook and cranny of this unforgettable city before setting foot in it.

Going north, you have to give a shout out to Providence, Rhode Island. Even after all these years, Providence remains on the top of the most interesting and most affordable cities to visit. Dining, museums, theater, art – events that all frown on cover charges – everything is set up for the family to enjoy without breaking the bank.

Portland Head Lighthouse, Maine

Portland Head Lighthouse, Maine

A tad bit farther and Portland, Maine, is there just waiting for visitors to see. Food, no question. The lobster and other mouth-watering crustaceans are worth the flight all by themselves, and the free live music, microbreweries, coffee experiences you will be amazed by, and indie boutiques, all come together to make Maine a pleasure.

Yes, there are more… From the City of Brotherly Love’s long list of historical sights to the fresh air, great food, and attractions like Dinosaur Ridge just waiting for you in Denver, Colorado – making plans for that winter getaway should be a whole lot of fun.
