Lesser-Known Green Gifts

Lesser-Known Green Gifts

by Amy Lignor

The mighty elephant fighting for existence, the stunning wolf gracing all the calendars that begs to have those guns stop aiming. The soaring dolphins and majestic whales that need a clean habitat immediately, and the mighty lion who needs
far more centuries in which to roar. These are the faces that are seen and helped by millions, through the World Wildlife Federation, the National Resources Defense Council, as well as others. These organizations are out there to make the Earth safer for those well-known animals in the wild, as well as plants, habitats, and the very earth we live on. And, yes, sales for animal “adoptions” soar at Christmastime, and more money is granted to these charitable organizations that work hard all year long. But there are others…there are the lesser-known animals and projects that need people to help that are overshadowed by the more well-known battles.

Adopt a Tiger

Adopt a Tiger

The greenest of all gifts is to keep Earth as green as possible. Through natural resources, scenery, the land, and giving to those “little guys.” Here are just a few that you should know about when struggling to find that perfect green gift that will mean a great deal to the buyer, the recipient, and the little guy.

Bees may be a species that scare the kids in the park because they don’t want to be stung. But, in reality, the bees need to keep buzzing. Bees are actually dying out at a swift rate, so by planting wildflowers that help the bee survive, these hardworking hives can actually save our world from pesticides and other chemicals. This is a great gift because donations are made of wildflower kits to schools, with students doing the planting to save the little ‘buzzers.’

Okay…baby buffalo are cutie patooty’s. No doubt about it. But sometimes they get lost in the shuffle. This gift protects those little ones in the herd, allowing the great buffalo of Yellowstone to roam in a park that is safe so their species can continue.

Monarch butterflies are stunning. They’re truly beautiful and should always be a part of the gardens in this world. By Monarch_Butterfly_(6235522618)giving a gift that creates a milkweed sanctuary, the butterflies get to have a habitat full of the one thing monarchs need to survive; milkweed.

And what about protecting an entire boreal forest? You are talking about allowing the birds a healthy habitat, by ensuring that Canada’s boreal forest, the most important songbird nesting area, remains a haven of safety and health.

As stated before, those huge kitties, like the lion and tiger, get a lot of support in the holiday season, but there are also little ones out there that do not grace the pages of a calendar. Many will believe that bobcats are plentiful, but there is a policy within our government that calls for the senseless killing of bobcats, so a gift to them would mean keeping them safe on public lands.

And when it comes to the land, itself, there are also gifts that can be purchased. There are gifts that go to saving old growth forests from absolute destruction. Majestic ancient forests are still falling from the industry of logging and other devastation. But you can be a “tree hugger” this Christmas and ensure that does not happen.

And if wishing to get that perfect green gift centered in a certain location, there are a slew that cover individual states. If you are a New Yorker, or your recipient is in love with the Empire State, then you can help protect the beauty of the Catskills. Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth to release gases inside. Water, sand and chemicals are actually injected into the rock, harming the mountains and infecting the Hudson River. The air needs to be clean and New York most definitely needs to be “green,” and you can help.

Looking at the other end of the country, you can give a gift that directly works to save Utah’s Redrock Wilderness from oil and gas drilling. People forget, as they stare at the stunning scenery in this area, that millions of years were needed to create the literal works of art that make up the Redrock Wilderness. Millions to create, but only days to destroy, if the industry of oil and gas continues to grow larger. The money given would go to winning the battle that Utah is fighting to gain permanent protection of this spectacular space.

So, whether a Buffalo Babysitter, a Kitten Keeper, or a Wildlands Warrior (as the NRDC states), these green gifts for the “lesser-known” aspects of our environment are incredible gifts to give. Not to mention, they will be appreciated by the recipient far more than the latest video game. Because with these gifts, they are saving the actual world.
