Late Season Spring Gobblers

Late Season Spring Gobblers

by Ted Lund

Calling in late-spring gobblers is tough enough, thanks to the added visual challenges of spring growth on trees and underbrush. Couple that with a tom’s waning interest as mating draws to a close, and things are just a little tougher. Add a crossbow to the equation, and the end game becomes one of the most challenging — and rewarding — in the outdoors.

But hunters can give themselves the edge when looking at crossbows by considering four key features during the purchasing process.

StormRDX_AD_950x650First, it’s critical that your bow of choice is dependable — in working order year-in, year-out, in-season or out-of-season, on the range or out in the field.

The next consideration is fit and balance; hunters may need to shoot in awkward positions or hold the bow in place for extended periods of time when preparing for a shot.

Thirdly, you want a bow that’s quiet, so that the target turkey doesn’t react to your shot and dodge the arrow before it strikes home.

Lastly you need to think about speed. The relatively small kill zone for a turkey means the arrow has to be on target quickly; the faster the bow, the flatter the arrow. More speed can help compensate for any yardage mistakes, giving the hunter a continued chance at harvesting the bird.

One of the few crossbows on the market hitting all four targets is the new Storm RDX from Horton Crossbow Innovations.

The Storm’s simple, compact design is reliable on the range or in the field. Its unique reverse limbs and light weight result in an extremely balanced crossbow that’s easy to shoot, even when forced to hold position while a tom makes his way into your setup. Weighing in at a little over 7 pounds, the Storm RDX is perfect for carrying on long-distance hikes. Measuring 15.5 inches uncocked and 10 inches cocked, the compact design makes it a go-to for hunting in pop-up blinds.

Increased lethality is bolstered by the extremely fast 370fps arrow delivery and deadly 122fp of kinetic energy — all a result of the 165-pound draw strength. The Storm’s super-stealthy performance means your bird won’t know what hit it until it’s too late.

Wisconsin turkey hunter Dean Carlson is a big fan of the latest offering from Horton for all those reasons. And he’s got a big trophy tom to show for it.

“The New Horton Storm RDX allowed me to hunt hard, covering miles of ground in search of a love-struck tom,” says Carlson. “When the opportunity presented itself for the shot, the bow performed flawlessly — sending the arrow right on mark for a fast, humane harvest on a beautiful mature Merriam.”

Horton Crossbow Innovations manufactures quality crossbows and accessories, made in the USA, and designed for optimum fit, form and function. The company’s long-term objective is to produce highly effective, reliable and affordable designs, broadly accepted by hunters and recreational shooters of all age groups, physical abilities and genders.
