Increasing the “Green” One Feline at a Time

Increasing the “Green” One Feline at a Time

by Amy Lignor

Considering the number of canines in the world, what seems like a higher number than the 1+ billion-dollar Powerball jackpot, it is actually an interesting (and surprising) fact that the felines still “rule” and the dogs “drool.” The cat is the most preferred domestic animal
free-range cats, Trap-Neuter-Return, feral cats, Humane, Animal Services, to roam or not to roamin the world, yet when it comes to certain cats that should be appreciated and instead are disappearing like wildfire that feline love is going right out the window.

Free-ranging cats are everywhere, even the bobcat has been roaming the back alleys of certain cities. But as part of the “green” movement being heightened in 2016, groups are coming together, from wildlife nutritionists and biologists to people who work with game reserves, to aid the cat. All of these groups and organizations are working to control the number of free-ranging cats in an attempt to not only clean up the streets but also to stop the breeding.

To put this into perspective, think about the number of feral cats you see each and every day around your community. Some cities and towns still have rules in place to “pick them up” and put them straight to sleep. This brings people to the protesting state. However, cats are still bred and some pet owners do allow their cats to stay outside and roam.

When you see a stray, you should remember that the history of the cat is unlike that of a dog or other animal. A lesson for all feline lovers is that cats actually are the one and only creature that actually domesticated themselves. Over time, they preferred to live near humans, yet keep their solitary/independent life. They helped the farms out by feeding on mice and other rodents that stole the grain bring stored, and became a much-loved pet by the ranchers and farmers because of this skill.

Dogs are talked about as if they are the “NFL” in the animal world. But, it is the cat that lives on every continent in the world and many of the domesticated cats can be linked back to a rich and interesting background, where you will find them a part of everything from royalty to religion.

In our day and age, feral cats’ number one food choice is the bird. The cats are responsible for killing billions each year. And before there is a protest to that fact, there shouldn’t be. Managing the populations of birds is a must to make sure that crops do not get ruined. Conservationists in the 21st-century have come up with something called a “TNR: Trap-Neuter-Return” which is a far more humane way to stop feral cats from reproducing. Instead of immediate death when picked up by Animal Services, strays are neutered and returned to their areas unharmed. That way, they can still keep the bird and mice population in check, yet not reproduce.

In the end, saving the cats and dogs are a must. “Humane” Services programs and the “Humane Society” are not new ideas, but they are innovative ones that must be increased by every town, city or village around the globe to keep the world going “greener” and improve the environment.

Not to mention…save that precious feline!
