Hunting of Wild Hogs in Texas

Throughout history there have been literal overruns by the animal community that have led to falling economies, as well as huge environmental problems. Food has run out and habitats have been completely destroyed, simply because they were trampled and not able to be repaired. In 2013, the spotlight is now firmly focused on the feral pig numbers that are quickly rising and causing unbearable harm to both farmers and native wildlife.

Recently the state of New Mexico began a one-million-dollar project that involves both wildlife employees and hunters coming together in order to halt the overwhelming hog population. But it is not just New Mexico that is feeling the weight of this problem.

The Lone Star State is having massive problems with feral pigs. It is not a strange sight to witness a huge farm or a hundred acre field that has been Hogsliterally torn apart by hogs in Texas. Craters are dug, tree roots are exposed, the grass is trampled beyond recognition, and essential food needed by other wildlife has literally been erased. Farmers have no way to even plow the fields or cut the hay, seeing as that the craters the hogs have made are so deep the tractors can not venture out to do their jobs.

The statistics are horrific. It is a fact that wild hogs are a part of – if not the leader – when it comes to species that absolutely destroy the land. On an annual basis, approximately 39 states suffer and over $400 million dollars is reported in damages. Not only is this damage to farms and fields, but the wild hogs also enter into parks and recreational areas causing fear and harm to tourists.

Hunters are allowed to kill wild hogs all year-round in the state of Texas. There are absolutely no limits and the hunters can either kill them and use them for food, or they can capture the hogs alive and take them to slaughterhouses. Even helicopters are utilized in order to keep the wild hog population down. It is important to remember that this is not an endangered species by any means, so the no-limit rules when it come to wild hogs are simply necessary in order to control them.

Weather and landscapes also do not stop this species. From warm land to heavily forested areas, the wild hog thrives; and on top of that, we are speaking about a natural predator with instincts that allow them to hide and avoid traps.

The damage they cause to the food supply that other wildlife needs in order to survive and maintain their herds and good health is ironic when knowing that the wild hog can live on almost anything, which is why any landscape they find to dwell in is fine and they do not need to move on. Industries are being seriously affected by this overpopulation, seeing as that entire farms growing everything from rice to wheat – potatoes to hay are being destroyed. Not to mention the fact that wild hogs will eat food that the livestock needs, as well as eating the eggs of sea turtles – which are an ancient species now highly endangered and running out of time.

Being able to carry diseases that can be transmitted to domestic pigs also destroys the pork industry, as more and more are harmed and killed by the over abundance of the wild hogs.

When stepping away from the farmland, Texas, New Mexico, as well as other states are having to deal with the wild hogs entering everything from golf courses to lawns – ripping the land apart. For an animal that wasn’t even bred in the United States, it’s amazing that wild hogs have risen to such high numbers that they cause such extensive damage.

Hunters continuously find the wild hog as they are looking for other prey. Unfortunately, with the immensity of this problem, other wildlife and other herds could become diseased or even endangered if the wild hog is not corralled as fast as possible.

In other words…hunters unite! Texas, as well as the desert southwest, need your help before the wild hogs literally cause so much damage that it can never be made right.
