Hunting for a Haunt

Hunting for a Haunt

by Amy Lignor

Yes, October is here and Halloween costumes have been flying off the department store racks. Even places like The Home Depot have put up their inflatable dragons, witches on brooms, etc. for the front lawn so that trick-o’-treaters can have a little ‘scare’ as they come for the candy.

Celebrate Halloween, fear-fest experience, thrills and chills, ALONE, terrifying Halloween Scream Parks, unbelievable, horrific, Number 1 Haunted House in the U.SHowever, there is far more than just “cute” out there. In fact, millions of people look for the scariest haunt they can find; one that will cause them to shiver, scream, shake, and basically get on the verge of a heart attack before it’s all done. Therefore, here are a few to check out for the traveler searching for just the right ‘scream package’ to celebrate Halloween in style.

If you want something your kids can enjoy, oddly enough, a very quaint little town called St. Helens in Oregon is the city that played the backdrop for Disney’s “Halloweentown” back in 1998. This “supernatural town” strives every October to bring back the ghosts, ghouls and goblins, putting on a month-long festival filled with haunted houses all over town, and so much more. If a little kid is one of the family members wishing to enjoy the holiday, this is the tame, fun one they will have a ball at.

If you live in the great state of California, a haunted “experience” called “ALONE” is being put on in Downtown L.A. But this one is not cliché demons popping out from behind the china cabinet in grandma’s house, this experience is more on the side of performance art. Interactive, for one hour guests walk through with only a flashlight and come upon all different types of people in situations…thrills and chills are the name of the game.

And when wanting that true historical “vibe” that goes hand-in-hand with the best Halloweens, New England is the area to head straight to. From Sleepy Hollow to the witchy town of Salem, New England has the history of very real horror that went on throughout the decades. In Litchfield, New Hampshire, the legendary Spookyworld joined up with Nightmare New England to create one of the most terrifying Halloween Scream Parks in the country. The scale of this is mega-huge, and all types of freaks and demons roam around the grounds…right along with you.

One place that has earned significant awards in this category can be found in Green Bay, Wisconsin. And, no, I’m not talking about the chills from cold weather or mega-snowstorms that hit that area. This is even worse…“Terror on the Fox.” Intriguing, creative and highly innovative, this haunted event includes a whole lot for every member of the family. From taking a ride on an antique passenger train, that is the only haunt in this entire nation actually located at a real train station; to 3-D effects that makes this haunted house a landscape of horror, optical illusions, and other surprises around every corner – this is one Halloween jaunt that’s more than memorable.

If near the Lone Star State, “Thrillvania,” located in Terrell, Texas (20 miles east of Dallas), is one of the most haunted attractions in the world. We are talking 50 acres of land featuring attractions that scare the living bejesus out of over 20,000 people every year. At the core of this “fear farm” stands Verdun Manor. Designed by Disney Imagineers, this two-story haunted house is unbelievable.

In Columbia, Ohio, there is literally a Halloween journey that has been around for a good, long time: “The Terrorfest.” Formerly called the, “House of Nightmares,” this critically-acclaimed location has had a complete overhaul, with detailed sets, state of the art effects and a full cast of actors that raises this “gem” into the stratosphere, taking its place once again as one of the “best of the best.”

Last, but definitely not least, if looking for those cells where inmates bring terror to the grounds, head inside the 30-foot high walls of the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Called “Terror Behind the Walls,” this haunted house inside the prison has been ranked the “Number 1 Haunted House in the U.S.” (AOL City Guide), and received praise in the New York Times as being “perfect” when it comes to wanting a true Halloween fear-fest experience.

Be careful, of course. October 31st is edging closer and you don’t want to meet up with anything that may be rising from a grave.

Happy October, Everybody. Enjoy the Halloween atmosphere!
