Game Sled Talks Hunting Gear Maintenance

By ZZ Troutski

Although the warm weather has come upon us and many are turning their thoughts away from hunting to catching the ultimate Bass, hopefully one and all have completed the maintenance steps when it comes to storing their hunting gear. The whitetail is over, the turkey is here, but the maintenance of your equipment will always stay the same

There are many things necessary to getting that trophy buck, and one of the things that should be high on the list is cleaning and storage so that gear will be in top-notch form when Old Man Winter once again gears up.

There is one essential item, of course, that is kind to the hunter. That A+ Game Sled you purchased from Hunting‘s a Drag, Inc., is the one item weighing only six pounds that allowed you to carry a 400 pound buck out of the woods without pulling a Original Game Sledmuscle or destroying the surrounding wildlife. And not only is it the perfect mode of transportation, the Game Sled is also simple to clean and maintain. This innovative gurney is easy to store, seeing as that it comes in its own carrying case and is cleaned with soap and water.

BUT…this is not a fact for other essential gear you will need for the upcoming season. So here are a few tips for hunters that will allow them to keep all their equipment as pristine as the Game Sled.

When talking about your rifles and shotguns, although this seems like a tip that would never escape the hunter but sometimes does, make sure the firearm is serviced and not loaded when storing. If the stock is easily removable, make sure to clean the stock to keep all oil off the wood. An easy process can be found that will allow the firearm to be free of any build-up of either lead or copper.

From bows to rifles – whatever your choice of gear – make sure they are always cleaned and cared for properly. Any material left in the barrel of a firearm could cause malfunctions, so regular maintenance is also needed to stop this from happening. Lead and copper are actually enemies of the hunter. Copper will always appear in the muzzle in greenish-blue streaks and/or patches. Aerosol products and other cleaners can be found that will help make sure everything from the trigger action to the muzzle is good to go for next season.

And speaking of damage, the actual storage location you choose is important. Mother Nature can also destroy everything from tree stands to something as small as a turkey call, so making sure your gear is appropriately bagged and placed inside out of the elements is a must. Rot is most definitely something the hunter does not want to see.

Storing the camo clothing is also a must. The clothes must be laundered and completely dry before storing so mold/mildew will not accumulate. Use unscented detergents, and wash the clothes separately from other laundry (the carbon scent-absorbing hunting clothing needs to remain as perfect as possible). Storing the camo in scent-proof containers keeps it away from the normal everyday odors that occur in the house.

Boots, waders – all footwear is especially important when it comes to storage. The items must be fully cleaned with no dirt or debris left over. There are leather cleaners, waterproofing solvents and more, on the market to do this step right. The leather will not crack or spoil and the re-waterproofing solutions will make sure that when the deer hunting season opens, all is well.

Backpacks, tents, sleeping bags – anything able to be laundered must be, and laundered separately from anything else. Pesticides used, scent-blocking sprays, calls, mesh, netting – everything should be cleaned and stored in a safe manner.

Lastly, if you have a partner – a buddy that makes sure he’s at your side to do the job – off-season is the perfect time for extra dog training. Although no storage is needed, tossing your buddy a treat for a job well done should be high on your list of things to do!
