Even Fans are Getting Miffed with America’s Team

by Amy Lignor

The red-white-and-blue Aikman, the consummate professional RB Smith, and even the at times controversial, but not really when you consider today’s standards, WR Irvin are all in the NFL history books with basically no dirt on their uniforms. Even before, the legendary Roger Staubach (AKA: Captain America) and his perfect character made America’s Team well…something America could be proud of.
Jerry Jones, sins of the Cowboys, greed, Greg Hardy, embarrassments, America’s Team, uber-ridiculous, NFL footballBut lately the Cowboys have “come back” and outshone others in the NFL only by making rude comments that are running the organization into the ground. Their king, Jerry Jones, looks as if the red coloring in his cheeks has become permanent – but not from happiness or joy, but from pure embarrassment. And all he can blame is himself for making ridiculous decisions to hire and pay ridiculous amounts of money to people who were accused (some found guilty) of bad crimes. And just to make matters worse, HE is making ridiculous comments, as well.

Yes, it is understandable that any owner will hire anyone to help their team get to that Lombardi Trophy. Gosh knows Jones wants Dallas back on top and in the limelight…which, if you look at it, he has actually succeeded in doing. Unfortunately, the limelight they are stuck in at the moment is one of moronic speech. Can they play ball? Sure. But if they could only find a way to keep their mouths shut, they may actually be able to get somewhere. You wonder if Tony Romo, a nice, family guy, hopes at times that he will be able to one day play for someone else so he does not have to be affiliated with yappers who need to learn how to think before they speak.

People thought Seattle was bad (some still do), but at least there you’re only talking about greed. Annoying, but money is the way of all things for people, so sitting on a couch at home and watching your team fail so you can cash in comes in a distant second to the sins of the Cowboys.

We are talking about a man named Greg Hardy. NFL officials, very high up in the organization, were completely embarrassed by Greg Hardy earlier in the week. And a rap video with Hardy that appeared on Saturday, filled to the brim with guns and strippers, did not make their embarrassment wean even a little. The NFL’s VP of Social Responsibility (yes, that is a job), came out and said that Hardy’s comments “did not reflect the values of the league.” She went on to say that they will, among other things, “continue our education with all members of the NFL family.” Education is most definitely something that should be given to Hardy. Long ago, the answer would have been to wash the mouth out with soap, but we have become a more responsible society.

Today is the first time in a year that Hardy stepped onto the field. He was originally suspended ten games for a domestic violence incident that occurred in 2014. Later reduced to only four games, Hardy was found guilty before having his case dismissed when the alleged “victim” decided not to cooperate with the investigation.

It was on Tuesday that Hardy told reporters that for this Sunday’s game he wanted to come out “guns blazing.” A cliché, of course…used before, as a matter of fact. But what was really over the line was when Hardy spoke about Tom Brady’s wife, saying: “Have you seen his wife? I hope she comes to the game. I hope her sister comes to the game, all her friends come to the game…”

The golden boy before the ridiculous ‘Deflategate,’ and already showing the league that he is angry and will not be under suspicion for anything, Tom Brady said in response: “I don’t really care about his personal feelings.”

Many fans of the NFL basically wanted him to say: “What else would a person like that say? A scum is a scum, after all.” But Brady remained professional.

The NFL Players Association also released a statement regarding Hardy’s mouth: “We prefer that all the networks and media pay more attention to players who have been recognized for their good deeds.” Trouble is, there seems to be less and less of those guys as time goes forward.

When the mouth was silenced and the time came to “put up or shut up” for Sunday’s game, Hardy did do his job and sacked the QB. He even made Brady wince with one shot he gave. But…that was it. Brady was all fire – throwing for two touchdowns and even rushing for one. In other words, Brady and his team once again put a “yapper” in his place. Did Hardy deserve it? No one could have deserved it more.

America’s Team is moving far away from red-white-and-blue-apple-pie-America with each passing day. Perhaps it is time to nominate another team to carry that title so America doesn’t have to be embarrassed by Jerry Jones and his uber-ridiculous choices any longer.
