‘Dogs Deserve Better’ Committed to Releasing Dogs from Chains

If human beings wanted to come up with the cruelest punishment for “man’s best friend”, they have succeeded by chaining or tethering their dogs. Dogs are pack animals and having them isolated and chained is nothing more than cruel and irresponsible.

Chaining a dog is not only emotionally abusive but is also physical abuse. Imagine having to eat, sleep, sit, lay, eat and defecate withinDogs Deserve Better the same small area day in and day out. Imagine having a heavy chain around your neck as the days turn to years and you continue to exist without any social interaction, exercise, love, respect and even basic nourishment. These dogs are living as prisoners but longing to be family pets, not yard ornaments or a cheap alarm system.

Chaining or tethering a dog outside also leaves them extremely vulnerable to inclement weather, attacks by other animals, and cruel people. Many chained dogs have been set on fire, stolen, shot, stabbed, tortured, or poisoned. Given these horrific living conditions it is no wonder chained dogs are more aggressive and attack people.

Although many cities and counties have incorporated anti-chaining laws, they are not always adhered to or enforced.

Dogs Deserve Better, a 501c3 is a nonprofit organization dedicated to freeing the chained dog and bringing our best friend into the home and family. Their mission is to free chained dogs everywhere through education, rescue and rehabilitation, grass roots legislation and fencing programs.

In 2011, Dogs Deserve Better moved to Smithfield, Virginia, to open the Good Newz Rehab Center for Chained and Penned Dogs. Ironically this is the same site as Michael Vick’s former Bad Newz Kennels.

Dogs Deserve Better strongly believes that chaining is not only harmful to dogs but also leads to the death of children. Statistics have shown from October 2003 to today, 379 children have been killed or seriously injured by chained dogs across the country. These deaths could easily have been avoided had the dog not been chained. The psychology behind the chained dog basically states that they become very territorial of their tiny space and will attack anyone who comes into that area. That accompanied by the dog’s lack of human socialization is a recipe for disaster.

Ask yourself; would you want to live your entire life at the end of a chain? Then why do people continue to do this to dogs? No matter what reason people may come up with, the bottom line is it is never ok to chain a dog for life 24/7. The dog, a loving, loyal creature does not deserve to live chained or penned as a prisoner, yearning for a place in the family, craving acknowledgement, respect and love. We as their trusted caretakers have an obligation to provide it to them.

You can help liberate chained dogs from their miserable lives by taking a stand when you see this in your neighborhood. Dogs Deserve Better can help you with this by supplying you with a printout of a letter asking the owner to rethink their decision. You can get this on their website http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/. If you are uncomfortable approaching someone regarding their dog, you can complete an anonymous form on the website and a letter will be sent to the owner of the chained dog. If you need any additional help, please contact info@dogsdeservebetter.org and they will help you.

You can also help by joining Dogs Deserve Better and volunteering your time to be a rep in your area. Help with community awareness by hanging posters, showing the chained dog video to neighborhood watch meetings, schools or libraries, and placing brochures and door hangers throughout the community.

You can also donate to help Dogs Deserve Better. They provide financial assistance grants for rescued and chained dogs. It is called the Hero Grant Fund and is nearly empty at this time. Your contribution will help them continue to provide health care grants for chained dogs.

Start changing the way you and your community think about the chaining and penning of dogs today. Join Dogs Deserve Better to take a stand and make life better for all dogs everywhere.

Say no to chains!
