Destin, Florida is Calling for that Last-Minute Summer Vacation

Destin, Florida is Calling for that Last-Minute Summer Vacation

By Burt Carey

Renowned for its white-sand beaches and emerald waters, the Florida Panhandle city of Destin plays host to beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts every month of the year. But early summer is when it really shines.

Whether it’s family fun or a romantic getaway that brings you to the Emerald Coast, Destin’s got something to fit your style. There’s dolphin Florida, panhandle, Emerald Coast, family fun, romantic getawaycruises and open-air shopping. Locally owned seafood restaurants, and every Saturday night it’s Rock the Docks LIVE free music and entertainment at HarborWalk Village.

What originated as a small fishing village has become more than just a destination for some 4.5 million tourists each year. In fact, Destin bills itself “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” and these days it’s all grown up to include cultural fare like the Meagan Hindel exhibit “Awakening Nature” at Full Circle Gallery June 13-July 5.

The Red, White and Blue Celebration on June 18 and June 25 honors local heroes whose efforts of building better communities are recognized. There’s live entertainment, free kid’s crafts, face painting and a flyover of vintage World War II aircraft. The night is capped with a fireworks show.

For the romantically inclined, hop aboard the SunVenture I for the Destin Harbor Fireworks Cruise on June 18 and June 25. Adults 18 and over can experience a romantic night on the water on this 1-1/2-hour cruise that explores Destin Harbor and ends with a fireworks show. The SunVenture I is a Guy Harvey-inspired, 45-foot catamaran docked one mile east of the Destin bridge on the Destin Harbor. It cruises daily to Crab Island and for dolphin and sunset cruises. It can be privately chartered for parties of up to 49 people. Reservations are required either online at http://SunVentureCruises.com or by calling 850.424.6465.

Later in the month is the ArtWalk on the Harbor on June 21 and the Kids’ Summer Art Camp at the ADSO Art Center June 22-26.

Destin occupies a peninsula in Okaloosa County that separates Choctawhatchee Bay from the Gulf of Mexico. June temperatures average 87 degrees (Fahrenheit) for daily highs and a rather balmy 75 for overnight lows.

Don’t forget your sun tan lotion. The city operates 11 public beach access points, Okaloosa County owns another one, and the state of Florida operates Henderson Beach State Park.

Boat ramps and marinas are nearly too numerous to mention. Suffice to say, this little fishing village offers some of the best fishing on the Gulf Coast, and non-resident fishing licenses are a bargain: $17 for three days, $30 for seven days, or $47 annually. Other on-the-water excursions include diving and snorkeling, sight-seeing trips and sailing.

For golfers, nine area courses provide challenges for all skill levels.

The Emerald Coast Visitor’s Bureau offers tourists a free printed visitor’s guide by simply signing up on their website: http://www.emeraldcoastfl.com/travel-tools/visitors-guide.aspx. While you’re there, be sure to click on the “Places to Stay” tab to see the hotels, motels and condominiums in Destin.
