Braves Fire Manager Fredi Gonzalez

Braves Fire Manager Fredi Gonzalez

By Burt Carey

Just 37 games into the 2016 season, the Atlanta Braves fired manager Fredi Gonzalez on Tuesday amidst the ballclub’s slowest start in its history.

Gonzalez took over as the Braves manager in 2010 following the retirement of Bobby Cox. He led
Braves Fire Manager Fredi Gonzalez, Atlanta Braves, Fredi Gonzalez, Brian Snitker, MLB managerthe Braves to three consecutive winning seasons, including 94- and 96-win seasons in 2012 and 2013, but couldn’t overcome the club’s dismal finish in 2015 and its pitiful 9-28 start this year.

Brian Snitker took over Tuesday as interim manager, leaving his post as manager of the Triple-A Gwinnett Braves. “It is bittersweet,” Snitker told the Atlanta Journal. “It’s thrilling. I’m excited about being here. It’s bittersweet because Fredi is a good friend of mine. We went through a lot together here. He’s a good man. But it’s kind of part of what we do here. I mean, it’s just part of the business.

“Unfortunately when things go as they have been, somebody’s got to go. But I’m excited, I’m honored that (General Manager) John Coppolella and (President of Baseball Operations) John Hart entrusted me with this job. It’s a great responsibility. I’ve told people, it’s kind of like I feel like I’ve been preparing for it my whole life, and it’s here. And I’m anxious to get going.”

Snitker is in his 40th season in the Braves organization as a player and coach. He was in his third season as manager at Gwinnett.

For Gonzalez, it turned out to be an awkward beginning of the week in that he received advanced notice that he would be fired. After dropping an 8-5 decision to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on Monday night, he reportedly received an email that notified him of a commercial flight scheduled for him back to Atlanta Tuesday. The Braves were slated for the second of a four-game series in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Coppolella and Hart met with Gonzalez Tuesday morning to make it official.

Gonzalez, 52, who had managed the Miami Marlins from 2006-2010, has a 710-692 overall record as a MLB manager. With the Braves he compiled a 434-413 record, including a National League East Division title in 2013. He was the Sporting News National League Manager of the Year in 2008.

The Braves also fired bench coach Carlos Tosca, who was a Gonzalez assistant in Miami and Atlanta. First-base coach Terry Pendleton was named bench coach. He was replaced by bullpen coach Eddie Perez at first base, and Marty Reed, the Gwinnett pitching coach, will take over in the bullpen.

Gonzalez is the first Atlanta skipper to be fired since the club axed Russ Nixon in 1990. He was replaced by Cox.
