Book Launch: ‘Wet Silence’ by Sweta Srivastava Vikram at Studio PAUSE, September 19

Community PAUSE

Marga Fripp, Sweta Srivastava Vikram, Kate Campbell Stevenson, and Sushmita Mazumdar at Studio Pause

On September 19, 2015, from 6-8 pm, Studio PAUSE in Arlington, Virginia, will host New York poet Sweta Srivastava Vikram for the launch of her newest book Wet Silence published by the Modern History Press. This will be Ms. Vikram’s second appearance there, bringing her reflections on women’s issues to the Arlington community.

Studio PAUSE opened in September 2013 as a space where local writer-artist-educator Sushmita Mazumdar works and invites the community to PAUSE, making time to explore creativity and celebrate art and stories in the community. Some of the Members of Studio PAUSE—stay-at-home moms, travel agents, salon owners, chefs, non-profit experts, professors, and PAUSers of all types —will share their painted interpretations of two of Ms. Vikram’s poems. These paintings will be on display on the Studio’s Guest Wall, which is reserved for community members invited by the Studio to share their art. The paintings will be on view and for sale throughout September 2015.

Among the studio’s other guests that evening will be Lawrence-Minh Bùi Davis, founding director of the Washington, DC-based arts nonprofit The Asian American Literary Review and co-editor-in-chief of its critically acclaimed literary journal. He also serves as a consultant for the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, and as adjunct faculty for the University of Maryland Asian American Studies Program.

About the Studio’s Founder

After an 18-year career in advertising in Mumbai, India, and Washington DC, Sushmita Mazumdar started writing stories for her children about her life in India, and created Handmade Storybooks out of them. Since 2008, she has been teaching bookmaking to encourage intergenerational and multi-cultural story sharing in schools, museums, and at public events. After 15 years as a docent for the Smithsonian’s Asian art museums, she helps people use art to share stories and understand our diverse world. She opened Studio PAUSE with a Kiva Zip microloan, which she applied for as a graduate of Empowered Women International, a local non-profit that trains women to be entrepreneurs.
