Instructor Bio and Artist Statement

Deb Guess is a working metalsmith and mixed media artist who creates jewelry for a number of galleries and teaches classes in metalsmithing and a number of mixed media art forms.   She lives in Laurinburg, NC with her husband, Deck.  She is the proud mother of four amazing grown children and has a poorly behaved but loveable dog named Schnitzel.

“I am aware and grateful that art permeates my life in a wide variety of ways.   I am a gardener and love to see the artistry that occurs in nature.  As a cook, I am aware that all of my senses are engaged in the creating and consumption of great food.  I enjoy photography and find that it allows my eyes to focus and see in new ways.  I love to travel and I find inspiration for my art in nearly everything I see – architecture, nature, found objects, and books.  One of the things I most love about metalsmithing and mixed media is that both allow me to incorporate a wide variety of “stuff” into my work – fibers, paper, mica, metal, shells and stones, found objects, and more.

My favorite days are those when I have an entire day to create in my studio.   I am convinced that there is a strong connection between our creativity and our spirituality.  I enjoy the “centered” time in my own life when I am creating. I love teaching because it allows me to help other folks make that same connection between their creativity and personal spirituality.  I chose the name Soul Whispers Arts for my business because of the conviction that whispers from deep within inspire and impact our artistic expression.”.
