Are There Other Cars on the Racetrack?

by Amy Lignor

Not when Jimmie Johnson is around, apparently. Let’s face it – 6 Sprint Cup wins in 8 years; you have to come to the conclusion that for two years during this time period he simply was either nursing a cold, or taking the day off when the race was run.

Jimmie Johnson, with his sixth NASCAR championship, reminds a football fan of dynasties like the 49ers, when Montana was at the urlhelm. Johnson has become a legend in the racing world already, and he is SOOO not done.

The immortal Richard Petty is looking over his shoulder, while the late Dale Earnhardt is staring down from a much cleaner, nicer racetrack up above and crossing his fingers, because Johnson is literally only one championship away from joining them in the NASCAR record books.

Yes, experts already went bazaka about where Johnson stands in 2014. Will he become the best of the best? Will he win two championships and leave both Petty and Earnhardt in his proverbial dust? It’s not an out there thought, of course. Jimmie is enjoying the age of thirty-eight, and much like Tiger Woods in the golf arena, age doesn’t really matter in racing just as long as the eyes remain open and the quickness on the pedals remains intact.

Johnson is literally the youngest driver to win six NASCAR championships. But even Johnson wants to relax just a bit. When the reporters came at him like sharks after a bloody body, he basically smiled and said that: “There’s still great years ahead of us (the team). But all of that is in the future…I don’t want to focus on that yet.”

As well he shouldn’t. This is the time he should celebrate before gearing up to take on the challenge of bypassing two of the greatest racers in history. But the spark is in the eyes, my friend. Not only with Johnson but also his crew chief, Chad Knaus, who believes that the team is not even close to reaching its full potential. If that’s true, perhaps seven will not be their lucky number to bypass the greats; perhaps we’re looking at ten wins before Jimmie says so long to the sport that he is most definitely an expert at.

The list of teams and drivers that have had to be by the side of Jimmie’s car during championship races is long, varied, and basically they are all crying in their beers. After all, they had a solid chance if Jimmie HAD decided to take the day off this time around and let them win. One, Denny Hamlin, announced that winning was difficult during the “Jimmie Johnson” era; this is a phrase that brings Dallas Cowboys fans a huge sigh, remembering their Johnson era that actually worked…the era they haven’t seen since.

Jimmie Johnson may be the jaw-dropping competitor for NASCAR right now, but there ARE others who are coming up behind him. In fact, all they have to do is figure out a way around his car in order to see the finish line.

The era will continue unless someone finds a way to get Jimmie’s eye off the road. So NASCAR fans, if you are not a fan of Johnson (just like all those 49ers fans who were NOT fans of the Cowboys’ Johnson era), you’re going to have to sit back and deal with it! (But, of course, for Jimmie Johnson he’s not even interested in that NFL team; he’s too busy dealing with the ridiculous comment made by former NFL QB Donovan McNabb, who said that Jimmie was most definitely not an athlete). Come on McNabb, leave the cynicism at the door. He may not have to worry about getting hit in the head from a sack, but I have a feeling that getting hit in the head by a car wrapping round your body as it flips over would be a heck of a lot worse).

So, congratulations to the Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 48 team, and their incredible driver, Jimmie Johnson. A man who is definitely not done…

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy
