A Rookie Dream

A Rookie Dream

by Amy Lignor

Is this a rookie’s dream, or is Marcus Mariota actually a ‘rookie dream’ for his coach and his team? He began his NFL career looking a shoe-in for future induction into the football Hall of Fame. He made a great big splash last week while playing the Tampa Bay Bucs (not
Marcus Mariota, Cleveland, NFL, Heisman Trophy winners, Jameis Winston, Tom Brady, Tennessee, Titansexactly a team high up on the ladder when speaking of skill.) But this week, Mariota the Rookie Dream met up with the Cleveland
Browns defense – a defense that is rated much higher than the Bucs they faced last week.

This is the very first time history has ever seen a Heisman Trophy winner go up against two other winners of the Heisman in back-to-back games. First Mariota went and stunned not only fans of football, but also Jameis Winston – the QB of the Bucs – who is supposedly going to be a star eventually. Now Mariota had to face the embattled Johnny Manziel in Cleveland. You have to give it to Manziel; he is a QB who has been through a whole heck of a lot in his early time with the NFL; and yes, no one in his own home crowd of Cleveland seems to even want Manziel to stand behind center. But after watching the shows that occurred on the gridiron this weekend, the line: That’s Why They Play the Game, makes even more sense.

Nothing turned out (again) the way the experts predicted when it came to these Heisman trophy winners. None should be bashed, but when it came to the score posted on the board at the very end of the games: Jameis Winston, QB of the Bucs, beat the New Orleans Saints after losing to Mariota the first week out. Marcus Mariota, on the other hand, posted his first NFL loss. And as for Manziel, Johnny Football did Browns fans proud because he beat the “Rookie Dream” and showed that he does have the skill to do this job if he just has some time and support behind him to do it.

So who will be the Heisman breakout? Will there be more than one when this season is over, or will they all remain at the halfway point in the NFL while their fans continue to hope and pray their teams will one day play in the Super Bowl? Hard to guess right now. There were many stars this week, but the funniest was good, old Tom Brady. Super Bowl defender who posted 466 yards.

Tom Brady of the New England Patriots has been put through the rumor mill and his ridiculous days in court. But leading up to this week’s game, the very loud coach of the Buffalo Bills, Rex Ryan, was flying high from his first win and stated that the Patriots were the most hated team in football. He also joked about not even knowing what a “Gronk” was. Even though they didn’t have a blowout, the Patriots did win and embarrassed Rex on his home turf. Brady once again proved that the AFC is his to win or lose.

One day, however, a Mariota, a Winston, or a Manziel may just rise up to the top and show the world that they won that Heisman for a very good reason. It will be interesting to see if one of the three end up to be the next Tom Brady.
