A Pro’s Packing List: Paul Butski

JJ Reich – Have you ever wondered what professional hunters use in the spring turkey woods?

We interviewed a turkey pro (he hunts wild turkeys for a living…) to get a look at the gear, gadgets and other accessories that he loves to pack for any hunt. Check it out, you might just find something to add to your packing list.

Paul Butski has spent 30-plus years in the outdoor industry as a TV celebrity, seminar speaker, turkey call designer, and more. He has won over 200 1_Profile_Paul_Butskiturkey calling championships, including six U.S. Opens and three NWTF Grand Nationals. Currently, Paul is a co-host for Mossy Oak’s Turkey Thugs outdoor television, Regional Sales Manager for GSM Outdoor Products, and leads up a new company: Maestro Game Calls.

1) Walker’s Power Muff Quads ––My ears tell my eyes where to look. With these, I can hear gobblers in the distance a lot better, and I know what direction to look when I’m setup and waiting for that approaching gobbler.

2) Winchester Supreme Elite––And I never forget the Winchester’s Xtended Range No. 5s to feed my Mossberg 500, ‘Turkey Thug Edition’, 12-gauge Pump.

3) Big Red––When on a hunt, I like to chew gum. I always have some Big Red in my turkey vest.

4) Fatal Mistake 3 Mouth Call––In the early 1980s, I invented the cutter-style, top reed for the mouth call. I have one of these types of calls with me at all times. New this year, is my 3-Reed Cutter Call from Maestro Game Calls.

5) Cyclops Ranger Quad Mode LED Headlamp––Compact and hands-free; this great, little light is all I ever pack for a turkey hunt.

6) Nikon Monarch Binoculars––It’s simple, if you enhance your vision, you’ll have more success. I don’t leave for any turkey hunting trip without them.

7) The Real McCoy Owl Hooter––Versatile and realistic, the new locator call from Maestro Game Calls is very special to me––––It’s named after my best friend and master turkey caller, Billy McCoy, who died in March of 2006 after a long battle with cancer.
