Buffalo Bills Release DE Mario Williams

By Burt Carey

Defensive tackle Mario Williams was the first college player picked in the 2006 NFL draft. Today he’s looking for a job.

The Buffalo Bills released Williams this week following the 11-year veteran’s worst season as a professional football player, who had two years remaining on a $96 million contract signed in 2012.

The Bills also announced they have protected left tackle Cordy Glenn as a franchise player, and that they would re-sign left guard Richie Incognito. By releasing Williams, the team frees up about $13 million in the league’s salary cap scheme, allowing them to pay for Glenn and Incognito.

The team also released veteran offensive lineman Kraig Urbik, which will save the Bills another $1.7 million in salary cap, and running back Boobie Dixon, a seven-year veteran.

“We want to thank Boobie, Kraig and Mario for everything they did during their years with our franchise,” general manager Doug Whaley said in a statement. “Each of them contributed to our team in a unique way. Days like this are never easy and this is a part of the business that is difficult on everyone. We will now focus our attention on moving forward as we continue to prepare for free agency, the upcoming draft and the 2016 season.”

Williams, who has recorded 96 career sacks, complained frequently about the defensive system run by the Bills in 2015. While he played in 15 games, he managed just 15 tackles and five sacks, his worst season since being drafted by the Houston Texans. Just one year earlier he recorded 36 tackles and 14.5 sacks in 16 games.

Last week Williams told ESPN he would take a pay cut to stay with the Bills. “Yeah, I mean, it all depends on what it is happening,” Williams said. “My thing is this…obviously I’ve had big contracts, but once you get on a team and you get around the guys, it becomes family. The guys on defense, we laugh and talk about anything. We do a bunch of stuff together on and off the field, obviously. It’s bigger than just numbers. But at the same time, as for what you said about it being feasible, a (cap) crunch is a crunch.”

A North Carolina State alum, Williams is now a free agent. With 43 sacks over the last four NFL seasons, he’s likely to another home soon.
